The Alcohol Awareness Week PSA Contest has ended and four winners won prizes for their creative achievements.

First place and a $200 Visa gift card went to Chris Malenich for an MP3 hip hop entry regarding ways to enjoy the party scene while avoiding the career altering consequences of drinking and driving.

“College kids drink, there’s no getting around it,” Malenich said. “Just know your boundaries.”

Amy Wagner won $100 for entering a PDF with eye grabbing graphics and a text that reinforced the NIAAA’s (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism) message about avoiding the consequences of drinking too much.

An MP3 on the national college averages opposed to viewing drinking on how much student’s friends drink was submitted by Phil Gajari who won $100.

Likewise, Carolyn Kidhart’s MP3 encouraged students to think before they drink and shared some national statistics on consequences for college students.

“I focused more on just stating facts they students might think about and not sound like it’s coming from their mom,” Kidhart said.

She also won a $100 Visa gift card.

“We are not here to tell you how to drink,” John Balter, instructor in the counseling and human development department. “Bottom line, we want all of the good stuff and none of the bad stuff from our relationship with alcohol.”

Baltzer does not believe that students would give up something important, like their GPA, for drinking.

He does believe that responsible drinking is something that every student should consider before heading out to a party.
