The Millersville women’s basketball team beat out the only other previously undefeated team to cinch the top spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division this past Saturday.

The Lady Marauders met the Bloomsburg Huskies at 1 p.m. in the Pucillo gymnasium. The Marauders had an impressive season so far, 13-3 overall, and the Huskies went 11-4. However, both teams entered the gym without a single loss on their PSAC Eastern Division record.

Raquel Green scored the first basket with an assist from Mashira Newman, and Millersville quickly pulled ahead. Early in the first half, Bloomsburg managed to tie the score at 4-4 with help from freshman Dana Wieller. However, Millersville’s Gabrielle Styles was quick to answer with two points of her own, and the Huskies never touched the Marauder’s impressive lead again.

Around the six-minute mark, sophomore Sophia Water came up with three points, snowing the Huskies under a 17-point lead.

During the first half, Bloomsburg trailed behind in the double digits, thanks to a great MU defense. With just over a minute left Green grabbed two more points, forcing the Huskies to face a 21 point deficit ending the first period with a 34-13 lead.

In the first five minutes of play during the second half, Jenna Craig scored six points for Millersville, piling up the score to 36-13. The closest Bloomsburg came to Millersville after that was halfway through the second half when the Huskies shortened the lead to 16 points at 47-31.

Although the Huskies managed to score more total points in the game’s second half, the Marauders proved impossible to catch.

The Lady Marauders offensive was on display as they scored 32 total points of turnovers. The Bloomsburg Huskies managed only 12 points. The team worked well together, totaling 19 team assists, 10 of which came from Mashira Newman.

The Marauders managed to make the win look easy, despite Bloomsburg’s 3-0 division record. When asked about the victory, forward Green said, “We played hard. It was a good effort by both teams.”

Millersville women’s team is now ranked first in the division. “We definitely have a target on our back,” admitted Green.

On Wednesday, Jan. 27, the team travels to rival Cheyney University with a 6 p.m. game. Cheney has a 5-10 overall record, with 2-2 in the PSAC division.

After a stop at Mansfield (3-13 overall; 0-4 PSAC), the Lady Marauders finally return to home court with a game against East Stroudsburg (3-14 overall; 1-2 PSAC) on Tuesday, Feb. 2, beginning at 6 p.m.
