Talk About a Mama’s Boy

The Greek tragedy of ‘Oedipus,’ the Theban king destined to kill his father, marry his mother, and bring disaster on his city and family comes to life through the efforts of Citamard this month in Rafters Theater.

The production stars Millersville theater veteran Matthew Hudacs as Oedipus and Jamie Pfrommer, Daniel Weaver, and Scarlett McMullan as the supporting leads. The tale of fate and free will thrives on strife, sorrow, and mystery, and is sure to keep audiences captivated.

From the moment the show opens with the ominous beat of a drum and the ensemble takes the stage and tells of Oedipus’ childhood and the events surrounding the city of Thebes, you are sure to be hooked.

Hudac’s performance as the troubled king is sure to be a treat. He catches the audience’s attention not through volume or dramatic flourish, but through his subtleties. He captures the quiet cunning and intellect of Oedipus perfectly.

The show is directed by Tony Elliot of the Communications department and features an ensemble cast of both seasoned performers and newcomers to the Millersville stage. Elliot’s directorial skill is highly regarded among the cast.

“Tony really has a good style of directing, he relates to you and doesn’t just sit off to the side. He has a very hands-on approach” said Jeffery Wolfthal, who plays the Shepherd. It is very obvious that Elliot is an engaging director who both works closely with the cast and commands their respect. “He’s a nice guy on top of being a good director” said cast member Christina Rivera.

Wolfthal is confident that even those who have seen Oedipus multiple times will be in for a whole new experience. “The play was written to be performed in an amphitheater with a large crowd. With Rafters, you get a whole new perspective…it’s up close and personal.” Rivera said, “It’s got a modern twist to it. I get to wear fishnets and a skirt!”

Oedipus, presented by Millersville University Theater and directed by Elliot opens February 19 at 8 p.m. in Rafters Theater on the top floor of Dutcher Hall.
