Have you been hearing the word “Zumba” being tossed around in conversations on campus lately? There’s a reason for that! Zumba is the one of the most popular exercise classes across the country and has taken Millersville by storm.
According to the official Zumba website, Zumba is defined as “an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness-party that’s moving millions of people toward joy and health.” This definition could not be more accurate based on what’s happening in Zumba classes here on campus. The three Zumba instructors that teach classes here are incredibly energetic people who strive towards teaching classes that are good workouts as well as being fun.
Zumba has been described by participants as “the best part of their week” and “the best stress reliever you will ever experience.” Many participants would say that during a Zumba class, they don’t even feel like they are working out because it’s so much fun!
Besides Zumba being a great exercise, for some people it is their motivation to put greater effort into their schoolwork. Zumba instructor C.J. told her story about how much Zumba has impacted her life. It was her motivation to put a greater effort towards school and has benefitted her in uncountable ways. Just like for C.J., Zumba has the ability to make an enormous impact in your life.
The benefits of regular exercise are endless, as most of us have heard before, but the benefits of Zumba are even greater. Zumba is a fun workout that is accessible to virtually everyone, no matter their fitness level. Zumba involves dancing in a safe environment that helps build confidence. The girls and boys that attend Zumba would attest to a certain community atmosphere that exists within the classes. Everyone is there for the same purpose, and there are very few judgmental stares being thrown around the room.
The music played during Zumba ranges from Latin-inspired samba music to popular music played on the radio. Recently, the first outdoor “glow in the dark Zumba” was held outside the new Performing Arts Center on the north side of campus. This event was greatly attended and included glow sticks, fitness tips, and plenty of hip-shaking music!
Zumba classes are held year round, and are extremely popular among students. There is a Zumba class almost every day of the week here at Millersville. The classes are held in the hockey rink in the SMC Fitness Center, except for Aqua Zumba, which is held at Brooks Pool. Normal Zumba classes are held on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays with instructors C.J. and Dena respectively, from 8 to 9 p.m. They are also held on Tuesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. with instructor Alex. Aqua Zumba, which is new to Millersville this year, is taught by C.J. on Mondays from 8 to 9 p.m.
With a Zumba class held almost every day of the week, how could you resist stopping by to see what the craze is about? People of all ages, genders, and fitness levels are welcome at Zumba classes with only one requirement upon entering: You have to have fun!
