Millersville University’s homecoming festivities were worth tweeting about from October 11 through the 14, which was comprised of the unique #muhc2012 hashtag.  This idea came out of the Technology Committee of the Alumni Association, which brainstorms interesting ways to past and present Millersville students through social media channels.

“During our last meeting we thought the idea of utilizing a hashtag would help everyone on campus, even those not able to attend, join in a shared experience celebrating Homecoming,” shared John Held, chair of the Technology Committee.

Through the hashtag, Twitter users are able to share photos, events and overall memories of Millersville’s Homecoming with a simple click.  The #muhc2012 hashtag groups all of the Homecoming tweets together, which allows for users to see aspects of Homecoming they may have missed or weren’t a part of.

The committee has been in existence for three years and meets virtually four times each year via Skype.  “We are always exploring new technologies and bring recommendations back to the full board,” explained Held.

Sporting a profile picture of Miller and S’Ville, the official Millersville University Alumni Facebook page is comprised of pictures and visuals to make alumni feel more at home and connected to the University.  From flyers about homecoming reunion events to comments from past alumni, the page is focused on bringing past and current Ville students together.

Additionally, their LinkedIn page covers topics like “Who’s got your favorite slice of pizza in Millersville?” all the way to how alumni feel about changes on campus in 2012.  It acts as a place for open discussion and even career advice.  There are a total of 2,300 members in both the LinkedIn group and the Facebook page.

In the past, the committee has executed projects like Facebook photo and trivia contests to connect with users.  No technology or social media experience is necessary to join the committee.  Those interested in joining should contact Kelly Davis, assistant director at the Office of Alumni Engagement, at Kelly.Davis@millersville.edu.
