After suffering a loss at Shippensburg this past Wednesday, the Lady Marauders were able to rebound and defeat the Mansfield Mountaineers by a score of 75-49.
Mashira Newman fell just shy of recording a triple-double with 14 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds on top of four steals. While still being able to record a double-double, Newman now has five in her career.
The win puts the Lady Marauders at a strong 13-6 record, with a record of 10-5 in divisional play. Mansfield fell to 4-15 on the season.
Aurielle Mosley provided a great deal of help for Newman in her successful game, scoring 14 points while making an impressive 5-of-7 shots. Mosley also managed to block two shots and enforce her title of PSAC East player of the Week.
Millersville immediately claimed a 6-0 lead to start off the game. After a 22-8 run increased their lead drastically, the teams headed into the locker rooms with a feeling of surprise. The Lady Marauders had taken complete control of the game with the score at 34-24.
At the start of the second half, Mansfield came out of the gate with intensity, scoring the first three points. However, Millersville answered swiftly, going on a 15-0 run with scores from Miesha Cousins, Newman, and Alexis Martin. Despite such a strong offensive strategy, it was the Lady Marauders’ defense that played the biggest role in their victory.
They held the Mountaineers to a mere 34.6 percent shooting, and forced 33 turnovers. With such a high turnover rate, Millersville was able to score 35 points off of it.
On the other hand, the Lady Marauders only had 14 turnovers, holding Mansfield to just seven points off of them.
After such a confident win, Millersville looks to achieve victory over Bloomsburg Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. The winner of this game will determine the first place team in the PSAC East.
With their heads held high, the Lady Marauders plan to attack the Huskies early on, and establish authority to secure a first place spot in the division.
