This past weekend, an ill-favored snow shower cancelled the Shaw University inaugural Softball Challenge in Raleigh, NC. The Challenge featured 28 teams, including Millersville, and was scheduled to showcase 70 games over the course of the three day tournament scheduled from February 15-17.
The tournament held by Shaw in conjunction with the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance and the Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department was to showcase 28 teams from Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
The tournament was designed to bring exposure to the teams participating and was also to double as a youth clinic sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department. The clinic was created for girls 14 and under who were to actively participate with 11 of the competing college teams to learn fundamentals and skills useful in softball.
On the first day of the tournament Millersville was 1-1 after facing a 3-1 loss to Glenville State College and then a 13-1 victory over Shepherd University. Saturday’s round of games was to start with more community outreach between Shaw and their local Make-A-Wish Foundation. The school was planning to collect donations for the foundation after a local girl suffering from Glucose Transporter Deficiency Syndrome, also known as Glut1 DS.
But an unscheduled snow shower began Friday night that continued into Saturday morning all games Saturday were postponed to Sunday, yet after conditions did not improve all games for the rest of the tournament were cancelled.
Out of the 70 games that were scheduled for the Challenge 24 of Friday’s games were contested and 42 were cancelled.
The Marauder’s softball team will now have a little less than two weeks to prepare for their next set of games against the Bowie State Bulldogs in Bowie, MD. Their first game will start at 1 pm.
