After a runner-up finish last week, the Black and Gold lady golfers finished in third place, falling slightly short of the Golden Bears of Kutztown and the Golden Rams of West Chester on Sunday in the East Stroudsburg Invitational. A mere 10 shots behind second place, the young Lady Marauders strutted their way to a cumulative score of 385.
In the one-round tournament, Millersville freshmen Jamie Wharton and Kendal Olear shined by both placing in the top 10.
Wharton improved her 90.2 stroke average with her 87 on the day, landing her in a tie for 7th. Olear, whose stroke average was teetering on the 100 border, scored with a 20-over-par 90 that was worthy of the 10th spot overall.
Just outside of the top 10 was veteran Amber Rohrer, whose 92 was just two birdies away from a tie with Olear. At the rear of Millersville’s squad was freshman Cara Geiger, who tied for 24th in the 35-player field with her 116.
To Millersville’s Big 3 – Wharton, Olear and Rohrer – being near the top of the leaderboard is nothing new.
In the first tournament of the season, the Big 3 started out with a bang, with Wharton and Rohrer placing first and Olear snagging third. In the last tournament in March, the Marauders took having home-field advantage for its literal meaning and trumped everyone but themselves with a three-way-tying +18 at Millersville’s Crossgates Golf Club.

During this spring season, which came to a close on Monday with the Eastern University Invitational, the Big 3 surmounted, in some cases, two-thirds of the competition by each member solidifying a top-20 spot. Together, they’ve acquired 14 top-10 individual performances and 3 top-5 team efforts over the course of the latter portion of March and most of April.
Their strong showing has allowed Geiger to come out of the woodworks and join in on the success. She put in her first hours of golf at the collegiate level in the Kutztown Invitational on April 6th and has stuck with the team ever since.
Can you smell a Big 4?
The answer to that question will come to the surface as the Lady Marauders get back into action next September for the unraveling of the 2013-14 season.
