The Lady Marauders shut down Lindenwood’s offense entirely.

The field hockey team began its 2013 campaign on Friday, playing host to the Lindenwood Lions. It was an amazing day for hockey as the crowd was treated to a 7-0 win by the home team. The girls exploded offensively, scoring seven goals against Lions goalie Victoria Gil. They scored quickly and often, putting pressure on Gil the entire game, who finished the day with 10 saves. The Lady Marauders totaled 31 shots for the contest, 15 in the first period and 16 in the second frame. Millersville goalie Lauren Sotzin earned the shutout for the Marauders, stopping the only two shots she faced. The defense held the opposing offense to just three shots, all of which came in the first period. Freshman Margaret Thorwart got the scoring started with the first of two goals when she blew one by Gil at the 20:46 mark, assisted by Champayne Hess. Her second came late in the final period not long after she checked back into the game at the 60-minute mark. The play started off of a corner kick by Mary Atkins that Thorwart quickly put in the back of the net. It came exactly a minute after Samantha Ruane scored immediately following her return to the field. Her first goal of the season came when Thorwart attempted a shot that was blocked and Ruane knocked the rebound behind Gil. The senior also had two assists on goals by Katelyn Zapp and Jayde Kauffman in the first period. Also scoring goals were Alicia Youtz in the opening minutes of the second period, with Sarah Bomberger earning the assist. Then Arianna Grays scored with Kauffman, getting the assist at the 51:31 mark of the period. It was a complete game effort by the Lady Marauders, who entered the day ranked 4th in the division.
