There was not an empty seat in the Myers Auditorium on Tuesday evening for the UAB sponsored Drag Show, which was a diversity-based event. The ladies showed up fashionably late but they did not disappoint the awaiting audience. Three drag queens gave quite the performances, therefore producing a quality drag show. Elektra Fear St. James, Miss Shanae St. Claudia and Dominana Dupree were all the rave of the stage, with their larger than life personalities, flips and crazy splits.
Elektra was asked if the “girls” do special appearances, she replied with “Five-dollars makes you holla, one hundred dollars in your hand takes you to wonderland!” Each queen performed two routines, which got the audience pumping, squealing and moving to the beats. The ladies were more then hilarious with their outrageous comments and quick-witted commentary with the audience. All three proved to be quite the divas.
After the ladies routines, they participated in a question and answer panel with the entire audience. Dominana was asked, “Why did you get into drag?” She replied, “It started off as a dare, and I just liked putting on women’s dresses!”
Also each queen was asked if they were in relationships, Shanae answered that she has been in an eight year long relationship, Dominana has been married to her man for three years, and Elektra has been single for seven years, she said “I don’t need a man in my life making it harder!”
The queens also all agreed that drag is an artistic art form, with original dance routines and customized costumes that stole the show. Another question asked to the ladies was if their families were supportive of them? Each answered that their families are very supportive of who they are and what they do in their lives.
All in all the gymnastic stunts and flare for the dramatic provided the audience with an eye-opening experience into another type of lifestyle. Students who were looking for an exciting and interesting night more then received their fair share of fun!
