Sometimes 90 minutes just isn’t enough time for one team to come out on top. Such was the case Saturday afternoon, when the Marauders, led by freshman Rebecca Maguire, topped Mansfield by a score of 1-0.
In the 93rd minute, Rebecca Maguire put the ball in the back of the net for the first collegiate goal of her young career, giving the Marauders a 1-0 win and pushing their record to 4-0 on the season. Saturday’s game marked the second straight shutout for the Marauders and goalkeeper Olivia Webber, and the third straight victory over the Mansfield Mountaineers.

The women’s soccer team scored late in the game to give them the lead, which ultimately led to their win, surging their undefeated record forward.

Maguire’s goal gave the Marauders their best start since the 2000 team started their season 5-0, and moved the team into a tie atop the PSAC-East standings. The Marauders and the East Stroudsberg Warriors are the conference’s only two undefeated teams.
Following a foul on the Mountaineers in the 93rd minute, a free kick bounced around, finally landing at the feet of Maguire. Without so much as a second though, the freshman unleashed a ferocious shot past the diving Mountaineers goalkeeper into the left side of the net. Cue celebration, the team mobbed Maguire.
Although the Marauders attempted a season-low four shots on target, it was the fourth and final shot, Maguires, that would be the difference maker. Where the offense was quiet, the defense, namely Webber, played excellently. Hard-nosed play by the Marauder defense limited Mansfield to just three shots on goal, all three of which were saved by Webber.
Though there were scoring chances for both teams, neither was able to capitalize. Strong showings from both defenses combined with some miraculous saves by both goalkeepers came together to produce a game much closer than what you may expect from a game putting a winless team on the home turf of an undefeated one.
The Marauders will look to extend their winning streak to five next week against Clarion. The game is slated to begin at 4 p.m. At Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
