Sitting at an impressive no. 14 ranking, the Millersville women’s soccer team headed into enemy territory against Indiana University of Pennsylvania, needing a win to claim their best start in school history.
With IUP outshooting the Marauders 14-3, the pressure seemed to be too great to overcome. However, goalie Olivia Webber turned away seven shots in the game to register her third shutout in the team’s last four matches.
Millersville’s attack was strong, but not successful in the beginning. Freshman Savannah Hall had an opportunity to score off of a corner kick, but was blocked by a determined Crimson Hawks defense. Junior Kelsey Mattola also had a chance to score from a high shot, but missed by just feet.
Later, IUP pushed forward offensively, but failed to get anything past Webber’s stonewall performance. Both teams’ defenses proved too tough during regulation, sending the game into overtime.
Just three minutes in, Felicia Cramer scored a beautiful shot past the Crimson Hawks goalie to give the Marauders a 5-0-1 record; their best start in the team’s history. The victory was Millersville’s first over IUP since 1998.
The Marauders look to extend their impressive record against as unbeaten East Stroudsburg team this Saturday night, and prove that they deserve a ranking much higher than it currently is.
