November is here and everyone is abuzz with happiness because they can taste the delicious meals that are cooked at Thanksgiving, and it also means that Christmas break is close. Besides Thanksgiving, there’s another special happening in the month of November: that is No-Shave-November. For beard lovers, this is the best time of the year. Junior Ella Alonso said, “Bring it on!” when asked how she felt about the upcoming hairy month. Junior Jamie Tyre has a different outlook on it. “I think it’s a really cool idea, but there are some guys out there who shouldn’t participate in it because of the way their facial hair grows in.” Men’s Hair says that the quantity of and the way in which facial hair grows in is determined by the amount of protein and keratin and not the frequency with which you shave your face, which is a common myth among facial-hair growers.
“I really respect the idea and other guys who can grow facial hair, but mine comes in patchy and just looks messy after only a week, so I will not be participating,” said junior Ryan Roberts when asked if he would be not shaving for a month. So why celebrate a month of no-shaving?

While this no-shave month is typically embraced by gentleman, ladies should also join in on the fun of throwing away razors and avoiding any other appointments or routines that remove their hair.

This holiday of sorts started back in November of 2009 on a Facebook page. Their idea was to spread the word to others about not shaving and to embrace the hair that we can grow in support of cancer patients who have lost theirs due to various forms of treatment. Now the team has expanded outside of their Facebook page, which at the time had only fifty likes, paired up with the American Cancer Society, and now has an official website dedicated to the hair-raising month. Their mission statement is to raise cancer awareness and “supportive funds by putting a fun twist on the month of November”.
While this no-shave month is typically embraced by gentleman, ladies should also join in on the fun of throwing away razors and avoiding any other appointments or routines that remove their hair. The idea is to save the money one would usually spend on getting rid of the hair, whether through waxing or razors, and donate it to a cancer prevention organization. If you are not ready to add a little extra warmth to your body, their website offers various kinds of merchandise and all proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
One No-shave November website celebrates the art of “Noshember” by offering rules for those who want to have some fun. The Noshember website also shares various stories about men and their facial hair, significant others supporting their partners while growing their hair and other interesting no-shave culture quirks.
A side result of No-shave November is “Movember”. For those not interested in growing out all of their facial hair, “Movember” is all about sporting a mustache. The difference between the two no-shave events is that “Movember” focuses specifically on various aspects of men’s health, such as prostate and testicular health.
Fellas, if you’re looking for a reason to wear some facial hair, and ladies if you’re looking for an excuse to not shave for a month, this is the time to do it. Embrace that hair!
