The Millersville women’s basketball team kept its streak of consecutive season opening wins dating back to the 2006-07 season with a comfortable victory over California University of Pa. En route to the win was a balanced scoring attack in which five players scored in double figures.
Leading the way was Carly Gallagher, who led all scorers with 24 points, four rebounds and three assists. Although the final score would indicate otherwise, the game was knotted up at 64 all with just over eight minutes left.
At that point the Marauders never looked back, going on a crucial 27-12 run to finish the game.
After the half, Cal U. opened by pushing their lead to 51-41, but sophomore forward Yasmin Cooper and senior guard Senada Mehmedovic helped to close the gap.
Cooper also registered her first career double double, tacking on 13 points and 10 rebounds. Fueling the win also was sophomore guard Celeste Robinson with 16 points, nine boards, two assists and two steals.
The Marauders out-rebounded the Vulcans 54-39 and outscored them in the paint by a margin of 42-36. They also finished the night shooting 51.8% from the field in comparison to the Vulcans’ 33.8% field goal percentage.
For the California Vulcans, Miki Glenn scored a team high of 15 points and recorded three steals off the bench.
Millersville will next face off against West Liberty and then go up against Charleston in the Clarion Tournament on November 15 and 16, respectively.
