Now that the semester is in full swing, it is time for students to start searching for summer internships. The process for receiving an academic internship starts at the Experiential Learning and Career Management (ELCM) center on campus. This center has two locations, each housed in a different area. The Bedford House arranges internships and career services, while the Huntingdon House handles volunteers and community service. Both houses are located on the street opposite of the Student Memorial Center (SMC).

In order to begin the process of getting an internship, students need to begin on the ELCM webpage. This must start by completing an online orientation that can be found from the intern portion of the ELCM webpage. This orientation is an online presentation that gives its readers all of the important information they need regarding the internship process. After reading over the information and taking notes of how to complete the rest of the process, students must complete a short handwritten quiz. When printing out the quiz, be sure to print out a “Request for Academic Internship” form also found on the website.
This form must be signed by the faculty internship coordinator of a student’s major department, and returned with the quiz to the ELCM office. After returning the necessary paperwork, a person will receive more information about the program, including a personalized log-in to the internship system. From there, he or she will need to create a resume. Creating such a document can seem like a daunting task, but many professors and ELCM staff are willing to offer assistance to those who need it. Just think of it as a way to become marketable to future employers and give order to previous accomplishments. After polishing up the resume, students will be able to upload it onto their ELCM profile.

This website will assist students in finding internships related to their field of interest. Most internships require participants to complete writing assignments throughout the working period, and to complete a final evaluation. In order to receive three credits, students must complete all of the assignments for both the company, and for the university. For the summer session, applicants must enroll and pay tuition in order to receive credit. Because this process is extensive, many students opt to do internships for no credit. These students are able to create their resume on their own and send it to multiple organizations. Whether credit is received for it or not, it is always a smart idea to complete an internship while in school.
Internships are meant to help potential employees discover areas of the field they excel at and give them work experience in a real-world atmosphere. Employers will almost always hire an applicant with internship experience over an applicant with no prior work experience. The good news is that almost every company needs interns at one time or another. Internships are offered during the spring, fall, and summer semesters for credit. Be aware that internships previously completed are not eligible for credit now. Be sure to start the internship process early and continue the application process.
