Just one day after a 72-46 thumping of Mansfield, the Millersville women’s basketball team traveled to Kutztown, looking to win their second straight game over the home Golden Bears. A dominant second half helped the Golden Bears pull off a 77-67 victory over the Marauders
At the end of the first half, the Marauders held a two point lead over the Golden Bears, up 38-36. The team shot 46% from the field in the first half, including 4 of 6 from beyond the arc. Guard Carly Gallagher tallied 13 of her 20 points in the first 20 minutes before the Marauders lost their lead in the second half.
The Marauders field goal percentage dropped significantly in the second half, leading to their second half struggles. The team cut their shooting percent in half the second half, down from 46 to a meager 23. The Marauders’ shooting woes lead to only 29 second half points to the Golden Bears’ 41, giving the Bears a comfortable lead.
Gallagher’s 20 points led all scorers on the afternoon. She knocked down 5 of 8 field goal attempts, including 2 of 3 three-pointers and 8 of 14 free throws. The redshirt junior also managed to pull down five rebounds. Forward Alexis Martin finished second on the Marauders with 14 points.
After heading into the second with the two point lead, the Marauders jumped to a quick five point lead off of a jumper and a free throw. The five point lead was the biggest the Marauders would hold on the afternoon. Kutztown, however, countered with a 27-8 run, putting them up by 14. The Marauders were unable to bounce back after cutting their deficit to just six with just under four minutes to play.
The Marauders return home to Pucillo Gymnasium, looking to get back in the win column against Cheyney on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. The last meeting between the two teams saw the Marauders drop the game by just a single point, 61-60 back in mid January.
