Often times around campus, Greek Life is misunderstood for what it represents. One of the biggest focuses in being part of a fraternity is striving for the utmost success in what members do. Sigma Tau Gamma, Millersville’s first national fraternity, lives by the quote, “A Fraternal organization for young men based on the principles of Value, Learning, Leadership, Excellence, Benefit and Integrity.” In turn, this leads to demonstrating academic success, as well as giving back to the community.

The alumni of Sigma Tau Gamma awarded seven brothers scholarships for their academic achievement during the fall semester of 2013. The scholarship program called “The 3.0 Club” provides scholarships for brothers earning at least a 3.0 GPA during each semester. Alumni Paul MacNamara commented, “We are quite proud of the brotherhood’s academic achievements this past semester. Not only did seven brothers achieve this goal, but the fraternity also has the highest cumulative GPA of all fraternities on campus”.

In addition to the 3.0 Club, the alumni presented the H. Craig Lewis scholarship to Nickolas Orehowsky. The H. Craig Lewis scholarship was established in memory of one of our local founding fathers and former Pennsylvania state senator. The award is presented to the brother with the highest cumulative GPA during the spring and fall semester of each calendar year.

Nickolas Orehowsky remarked, “I cannot begin to relay through words how much time and effort this alumni association puts forth for this fraternity, and can speak for every brother when I say we are eternally grateful for the financial scholarships, mentorship, and brotherhood they have supported us with”.

Along with achieving academic success, Sig Tau has been giving back to the community. This past February, Sig Tau participated in its first Polar Plunge. The fraternity was able to raise over $2,000 towards the Special Olympics. In early April, Sigma Tau helped Millersville’s own Dr. Garner with her gardening around campus, which is located across from the SMC.

Dr. Garner is active in the community when it comes to the environment, ranging from collecting trash and giving it to teracycle and having multiple areas in which she plants various crops.
