Millersville University’s Health Services (MUHS), located in the Witmer Building, provide an invaluable service to the students of Millersville’s campus. If someone needs a routine check-up, hurt themselves while playing a sport or just woke up with a sore throat, the employees at the Health Services center are happy to help. The Health Services staff are available Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Serving an average of 60 students a day, the Health Services building has a full roster of professional staff and five Registered Nurses to help students and staff when they are feeling ill.

With the weather shifting from beautiful to freezing, the quickly-changing temperature heralds the arrival of winter’s best friend: the flu. Flu shots are important to Health Services, and the employees encourage all students to receive flu shots to reduce the risk of contracting an unpleasant illness. With so many people living close together semester after semester, the chance of infection by a nasty virus is high.

Flu viruses are easily transmittable in a campus setting, so receiving a vaccination is strongly encouraged. Over the past five years, flu shots have been readily available to those on campus at Millersville University. Originally costing 25 dollars per vaccination, the cost has been reduced to the affordable price of absolutely free.

Lasting only minutes, the whole process is quick and, aside from a small pinch, painless for most individuals. If another incentive is needed, aside from the fact that each shot is completely free, each and every person who receives a shot gets their choice of a classic Tootsie Pop!

Over the past four years, the Witmer Building has seen some changes. A quick tour of the building shows off recent renovations of the numerous counseling centers, classrooms, offices and patient rooms.

On the first floor, there are various services available for students and faculty suffering from minor complaints. Guests can be quickly treated for small scrapes and cuts, upset stomachs, colds and flus, allergies and other aches and pains in the main lobby with the Self-Care Cart.

This useful service can provide quick relief, is easily accessible during MUHS’s open hours and, best of all, is completely free. Appointments for physicals, check-ups and other one-on-one visits are held in one of the many examination rooms and are easily scheduled by phone at (717)872-3250 or in person.

The entire second floor of the building hosts multiple specialty services for visitors of the MUHS. Some of these include Central Penn Rehab Services, YWCA Counselors for sexual assaults, Breast Cancer Awareness Center and private rooms for nursing mothers. The counselors for these services arrive from their work locations outside of Millersville at least one day a week, offering help and guidance in their respective departments.

Physical therapy, specialty medication for special conditions and massage therapy are available to everyone, the prices usually less than the average co-pay of about 35 dollars, making Health Services a cost-effective and accessible alternative to a family doctor.

MUHS provides a plethora of amenities for all students of Millersville University. Before venturing back home to visit a family doctor, or consulting a physician who asks for a hefty co-pay, consider stopping by the Witmer Building first for inexpensive, quality medical assistance. Don’t forget to take advantage of the free flu shots this fall so you can gear up to beat down the bug. It’s just what the doctor ordered!
