When the ghosts and witches and goblins come out to play Oct. 31, where will you be? If it’s on campus, there are several events lined up to get you in the spirit. Millersville is alive this Halloween with everything from student volunteer fire fighters giving out candy to community children, listening to spooky music and participating in a costume contest sponsored by the library.

Continuing with its Halloween tradition, Oct. 31 from 6-8 p.m., the Blue Rock Fire Rescue will enlist the help of MU student volunteer firefighters to deliver candy to children in Millersville Borough and the major residential developments of Manor Township.

“We ride around in our fire apparatus [fire trucks] and hand out candy to the kids. We also have some folks at the station on High School Avenue handing out candy,” said volunteer firefighter and vehicle rescue technician Nick Oakes, a junior at MU majoring in occupational safety and environmental health. “We usually load up right before dark and head out to all the neighborhoods. When we see kids, we’ll stop and give them candy and talk to them about being safe.”

Volunteer firefighter Jason Lashner, a junior majoring in early education at MU, said the kids enjoy receiving the candy and seeing the fire trucks. He also loves giving back to the community. “I think people like to see us outside of emergencies. It shows we are part of the community, just like everyone else.” If you see the fire trucks on the streets of Millersville, give them a big shout out of support.

It wouldn’t seem like Halloween without some spooky music. This year, the MU music department’s Jazz Ensemble will perform the concert “Jazz at the ‘Ville, Trick or Treat with a Beat¨ Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m. in Biemesderfer Concert Hall at the Winter Center. It’s an evening full of Halloween-themed tunes such as “That Old Devil Moon,” “Dr. Heckle & Mr. Vibe,” “Masquerade,” “Blues for Dracula” and “Witchcraft.” General admission costs 10 dollars, but the concert is free to students with an MU ID.

The Halloween spirit will also visit McNairy Library. Science librarian Melissa Gold and instructional support specialist Marie Firestone have planned a trick or treat for the University Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. until noon at the library. Stop by for treats and a costume contest. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to dress up as anything literary/book inspired. Prizes will be awarded for best of theme, best group (three or more people) and best non-theme. Participants can post their costume photos to the MU Library Facebook page, and the costume with the most likes wins.
