The color of April is green. The grass of the outfield is green and the coveted jacket is the same color.

April starts with the smell of peanuts and freshly mowed grass and the crack of a bat. It ends with the calling of names of the next crop of athletes to take the NFL by storm. In the middle a golf swing can be heard with the gallery holding their breath around Amen Corner for all these men want a green jacket.

Opening Day baseball starts April off with a crack. The long off-season is gone and the Boys of Summer are back. The World Series champs bask in the fortunes but that all goes away with the first pitch for every team wants what the champs have. Opening Day is like a national holiday, with many people skipping work to fill all the stadiums to capacity. It truly is a beautiful day when the national pastime comes back to us. April is just the beginning though; these players have another six months to fight for the World Series trophy.

International Education Week

The first of four majors is held the first full week of April in Augusta, Georgia. It is simply known as The Masters. It brings in the elite PGA golfers sending them on a challenging journey where only one can leave wearing a green jacket. It starts this Wednesday with the par 3 contest.

Then there’s a team looking for that one shining moment. Yes, it’s called March Madness and the bracket craziness happens in March but the Final Four is the first weekend of April with the tournament concluding last night. Duke danced through the gauntlet by earning six straight wins and getting Coach K his sixth national championship. It was one of the better games in recent history, but we have been blessed with some real classics like the last time Duke cut down the nets against Butler in 2013.

I have to show some love to the ladies as well. The ladies tournament concludes Monday night which will probably see UConn win their tenth National Championship under Geno Auriemma. No, that is not a typo. With a win Monday Auriemma gets put in the Wooden category when it comes to titles. That is some fantastic company.

The NBA an NHL seasons are dwindling down in April so watch out for the tight playoff races. The NHL playoffs start April 15, 2015 but they conclude in May. The NBA playoffs start in May but still some of the races are a little tight. So that will be something to keep your eyes on in the near future.

There is also the NFL Draft. The future of some NFL teams will change on April 30, 2015 in Chicago. They moved the location from Radio City Music Hall to Chicago this year. Also the draft is a tad later this year since the later rounds spill into May. Although, be honest; who really watches past the first night? So the real excitement is in April with the later or more boring rounds concluding May 2. Also, then we can stop seeing mock draft 75.0 and hearing Todd McShay and Mel Kiper babble about the draft.

There is a lot to feast your eyes on in April as it gets warmer and we inch towards summer. So just grab a cold beverage and relax on the couch while taking in the spectacles of April.
