Vice-President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs Brian Hazlett is this week’s Snapper Spotlight.
Though he was born here in Lancaster, Hazlett grew up in multiple areas across the East coast, including five different elementary schools across three states; however, he really considers Bel Air, Maryland to be his true hometown from his childhood. His dad was a Mechanical Engineer for the U.S. Defense Industry, so Hazlett’s family had to move around whenever his dad got a new assignment. From Bel Air, Hazlett continued on to St. Francis for his undergraduate degree in Secondary Education for Social Studies. Afterwards, Hazlett went to obtain his M.A. in Social Sciences from Binghamton University in New York.
Hazlett has been at Millersville University since Feb. 2013 and was brought in by Dr. Anderson. He was recently named the VP for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs as part of the university’s “BOLD Path” strategic plan, to fully incorporate the out-of-the-classroom student experience. One of his duties is ensuring student success alongside academic affairs. He also oversees departments such as Athletics, Financial Aid, Judicial Affairs, Housing and University Police. He is also helping to create new positions here for students, as well as full and part-time employees, including a Title IX coordinator, a new police officer and a Mentoring Director. He says that these positions were able to be created due to availability of new funds received from condensing Student Affairs and Enrollment Management together.
Hazlett chose to work at MU because he enjoys the feel of a small campus. He feels more at home being able to see the same people everyday and meeting so many students. He also decided to relocate with his wife and two kids to York because he wanted to be closer to home where the rest of his family is.
Some of Hazlett’s favorite hobbies include playing in the park with his kids, golfing and driving around in his convertible when the weather is nice. Hazlett does not only enjoy driving around in his convertible but is also into other collectible and antique cars. Hazlett has also recently taken up metal detecting so watch out for him; he might just find treasure underneath MU.
