The Avengers sequel came out on DVD and in Steelbook Oct. 2. The movie opens in Sokovia, Ukraine with the Avengers team fighting to recover one of the last Hydra weapons used in the first movie. In this beginning fight scene, the characters move so fast and so clearly that they look almost like animated video game characters. The dramatic and sometimes-overdone special effects continue throughout the movie.

Iron Man uses his new iron legion as an army to alert the civilians of Sokovia. Natasha Romanoff shows a new routine where she gives Bruce Banner a ‘lullaby’ to calm him down after a code green fight where he has to join the team as the Hulk. It’s also revealed that Tony Stark and Bruce Banner have created a metal suit nicknamed Veronica meant to calm him down but nothing seemed to be very effective.

Once the team retrieved the scepter from Strucker’s fort, Tony Stark had three days to examine the scepter but he chose to experiment with it more. When he tells the team is when the conflict really begins.

Baron Strucker and his two ‘experiments,’ twins Pietro and Wanda, are the new antagonists. Pietro has superspeed and Wanda has the ability to control minds or as returning agent Maria Hill summarizes to Cap, “he’s fast and she’s weird.”

Soon after she’s introduced, Wanda showed Iron Man a nightmare that haunts him for the rest of the movie. He saw a scenario where he survived while being forced to watch the rest of the Avengers die, which caused internal conflict.

Overall, this movie showed closer relationships between the characters who only just met in the first Avengers movie. There is also a lot of character development for Hawkeye. Clint Barton, who was an underdeveloped character in the first movie and doesn’t have his own solo film unlike most of the other Avengers.

As with all of the Marvel movies, they use quick, witty humor that you have to watch a few times to pick up on it all. There are many references to other Marvel films and also links to the comic books that the franchise is based on. The themes of artificial intelligence, fancy weapons and teamwork stay front and center as Captain America leads the Avengers on their fight to save the world.
