Princeton-born. New Jersey-native Dr. George Drake has recently joined the staff at Millersville University as the Dean for the College of Education and Human Services. Drake comes to MU from the PASSHE sister-school West Chester University.

Drake is originally from Hopewell, NJ where he married his wife, Linda, and raised his three sons now aged 22-27. He was also a camp counselor at a progressive children’s summer camp, “Camp Treetops”, in Lake Placid, NY. The camp was founded as part John Dewey’s ‘Progressive Education Movement.’ Since leaving the camp, his sons have continued to be counselors every summer.

Drake joined Millersville July 15 after his preparation of two years for the position. Drake’s first interest to join MU came when he heard of Dr. Jane Bray’s plans to retire. After researching more about Millersville and the work being done, Drake decided to seize the opportunity to be on staff at MU.

Dr. Drake received his B.S. in Elementary Education from West Virginia University to be a special education teacher. While teaching full-time, Drake was receiving his M.Ed. in Special Education from the College of New Jersey. He later went on to receive his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in Education concentrating in severe disabilities and college teaching.

Drake’s position as Dean includes hiring and evaluating faculty, scheduling courses, fundraising for the college and university, assessing learning outcomes, leading partnerships in and out of MU and managing student concerns.

Outside of Millersville, Drake is highly involved in the local and national community. He is on the Board of Directors for the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, part of the PA Professional Standards and Practices Commission and is a member of the AACTE Committee on Professional Preparation and Accountability.

“Millersville University is extremely fortunate to have Dr. George Drake on the Academic Affairs team,” stated Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Vilas Prabhu. “I am confident that his experience and leadership will serve the College of Education and Human Services well, as we move forward with Our Bold Path.”

Drake is excited to be part of the Millersville community stating that he enjoys the strength of the community and the helpful and friendly nature of his coworkers.
