Students anticipate Superfest

When the last four weeks of the semester finally arrive, there seems to be an immediate rush to work on last minute projects and stress levels increase. One exciting way to lower these stress levels is by attending Superfest, an end-of-year carnival of sorts for faculty, students and staff. Occurring during the last few weeks of the Spring term, Superfest takes on a unique theme each year, and poses as a three-day event for students to visit organization tables and enjoy playing games and earning prizes.

Traditionally, Superfest had been held in the “quad,” also known as the central space connecting the old dormitories on campus. While this space hosted many events, the reconstruction of the dormitories made cause for relocation elsewhere, landing Superfest’s new home in the Marauder Courts for the last few years.

Return students are usually aware of this event, but newcomers or transfer students often go by without realizing this event is open to them. Hosted by the University Activities Board, students have the opportunity to visit organizations’ tables to play games and earn tickets to place in raffle boxes for various gift baskets provided by clubs. In addition to this, there are usually large inflatables for adults such as obstacle courses and all music is provided by WIXQ for the event.

Themes such as ancient Greece and Hollywood have been used for the event and this year’s theme is Disney Pixar. In celebration and preparation, students were able to compete in designing the t-shirt for this year, requiring “UAB Superfest 2016” and the dates for the event on the back.

This event has often been grouped with additional end-of-year events such as the Spring concert, and on-campus movie nights. In prior years, this movie was shared in the quad on a large screen and students were provided with a drive-in experience of sorts with free popcorn from UAB members.

Other kinds of activities available to students have included free caricatures, popcorn and cotton candy, spray-on tattoos, and the use of photo booths. Karaoke and Lip Sync Contests have also been popular activities for the event as well.

While spending time to prepare for the end of your semester, be sure to keep in mind this three-day Superfest to take a break and enjoy a few games and some mental down time. It is good to focus, but it is also healthy to take a break and relax in between study sessions, and this event is a fun way to do so. This year’s Superfest will take place from April 27 through April 29, 2016.
