As we move along the month of October, much comes to mind. Autumn leaves begin to change color in fall, the air begins to chill, and the thrill of Halloween embraces the country. Here in Millersville, Halloween spirit begins to take shape. Pumpkins are carved, candy and costumes are bought, houses and yards are decorated, and haunted attractions have once again opened to scare those most unfortunate to venture in.
For those at Millersville University, there are two local haunts that all students frequent, Jason’s Woods and Field of Screams. For those that have not visited these haunted attractions, no need to worry. Fortunately, there are still several weeks to attend.

Jason’s Woods is located out past the back of MU’s campus down Stehman Road. As you near the site, distant sounds of screams and chainsaws begin to take form. When you enter the haunting grounds, there are attractions all over.

After buying the ticket, you have admission to five amazing attractions: the Horrifying Hayride, Lost in Jason’s Woods, Chamber of Horrors, Zombie Apocalypse, and the Carnival of Fear. The first attraction on the list is the hayride. While hayrides all begin to blend, the one at Jason’s Woods stands apart due to new technology incorporated, immersing the riders in each scene and scare. The acting is superb and there will be at least one moment along the ride that you may scream or jump. Following the hayride is a walk through the dark woods, where the group will encounter various nightmares and creatures.

After these two attractions, you have the choice of which order to complete the final three haunted houses. One is filled with zombies, another various horrors, and the final one demented clowns. the detail in each scene and acting capabilities is definitely at a high level, leaving each attendee with many scares and much to talk about afterwards. There are several standalone attractions that can be added on for an additional fee, one revolving around the Wizard of Oz and another being a circus gone crazy.

On the other side of Millersville, right as you enter Mountville, one cannot pass through without making a stop at Field of Screams. This extreme haunted area features four top thrill scares: the Original Haunted Hayride, Den of Darkness, Frightmare Asylum, and Nocturnal Wasteland. You get to choose the order you attend the attractions.

No matter what order, the scares are quick to follow. Frightmare Asylum and Den of Darkness both are located inside an old farmhouse and barn, providing an already creepy environment that then is filled with all the fears and phobias one can imagine. Nocturnal Wasteland is an outdoor walk through attraction, yet even though there is more area to run, you never know what is lurking in the dark.

Be careful which way you go or you may find yourself traveling alone a few times during the walkthrough. The final attraction of the four is the hayride. Year after year, thousands of people travel just to go on this ride, one that is sure to leave some riders screaming.

Whether you go to only one or even both, it is sure to be a hauntingly good time, filled with screams, scares, and chills. As Halloween approaches, what better way to get in the haunting spirit than a few nightmarish creatures to try to scare.
Check out both websites for prices as well as special events, like Extreme Blackout at Field of Screams, a night where all the attraction lights are out and the scares are cranked way high. Though it’s still a few weeks away, Happy Halloween and Happy Haunting Millersville!
