Look out, Kanye, Kim, and Katy. It seems like Taylor Swift is breaking out of the mold full force, and there’s no looking back. Recently, T-Swift dropped two new singles “Look What You Made Me Do” and “…Ready for it?”, causing fans of Swift to go beserk. “Look What You Made Me Do” is a catchy, bass-filled, and intense song that screams revenge. In the song, Swift sings “Maybe I got mine / But you’ll all get yours”. Who could she be referring to? Ladies and gentlemen, we don’t have time to list all the people who have wronged Taylor Swift. Look at each one of her albums and the names will just start rolling off your tongue. It’s obvious, however, that this song is most likely about Katy Perry, Kanye West, and Kim Kardashian.

Swift and Perry started their feud quite some time ago but it all culminated when Swift released “Bad Blood”, presumably about Perry. West and Swift have been in muddy waters for close to a decade. It all started with the “I’m gonna let you finish” speech at the VMAs when West took the microphone from Swift and made it clear he believed Beyonce should have one in that specific category. It seemed like things were okay for awhile after his public apology and many friendly public conversations between the two. That is until Kanye came out with his song “Famous” of his 2016 album “The Life of Pablo”. In the song, Swift is mentioned when West refers to her as a misogynistic term and then claims to have made her famous, after the VMA speech went viral. Obviously, Swift was mad. Did she have a right to be though? After making a public speech urging her fans not to let anyone take credit for her fame, Kardashian leaked a series of videos that seem to show West rapping the lyric to Swift, followed by Swift giving permission to him to use it. And thus started Swift’s reputation as a snake. What’s a snake? According to Urban Dictionary, which is not a reliable source for your English papers, it is “a scamming backstabber. Someone who does something just to get something out of it.”

Now that you know the background of this giant pickle, let’s hear my opinion. Taylor Swift has been America’s sweetheart for a long time. People believe she got that role because she always plays the victim. I don’t understand how writing songs about your relevant life and heartbreak is a bad thing. Other artists in the music industry sing about love and life like Sam Smith, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and Adele. That’s a small list compared to the actual list of musicians that talk a whole lot about love. Heartbreak is a common human condition that can really be hard to handle. Channeling that into music can be therapeutic. Why are we criticizing someone for doing that? Swift never explicitly says the names of the people she writes songs about. However, the media and the public enjoy the game of trying to figure who Swift is talking about this time but not Swift herself.

With this new album coming out, it’s going to be a whole new Taylor. It’s going to packed with revenge, heartbreak, and real-life issues. Channeling drama, heartbreak, and traumatic issues into song isn’t a bad thing. In fact, I’d argue it’s a healthy coping mechanism compared to others. I’m excited for this next album and can almost guarantee it’s going to hit the charts hard.
