“VOLUME” in Eckert Art Gallery in the Winter Center examines women’s voices that often go unheard. This exhibit is about turning up the volume of the voices of women everywhere. The ensemble comes from the art of 12 different women curated by Leigh Suggs.

“This exhibition is centered on the idea of sound, space, and growth and what happens when one singular voice, thought, or idea is multiplied and magnified” says Suggs. She claims that the collective female voice has been made soft and easily cast aside. Suggs wants to change that dynamic through “VOLUME.”

A common theme throughout the exhibition is the color pink, the color most often linked to femininity. “Pink can be fun, light and easy as a giggle but alternately it’s dusty velvet depth can carry the weight of ages,” Sugg says. She claims the color represents diverse and complex cultural ideals.

The free exhibition opened on Oct. 18 and will continue until Dec. 6. Gallery hours are 1-7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 11a.m.-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays.
