The Millersville men’s basketball team was able to pull out a close one against the East Stroudsburg Warriors on last Saturday, Jan. 31.
The Marauders were led by redshirt junior Anthony Moe, who was able to pour in 22 points while shooting 71 percent from the field and pull down 18 rebounds in the contest. Moe was able to provide excellent defensive help as well, swatting two shots and grabbing two steals in 31 minutes of playing time.
East Stroudsburg had typically been known for their high powered offense, but Millersville was able to hold them to a very low field goal percentage as they shot just 35.2 percent from the field and scored only 58 points in the game. Millersville easily bested this as they shot 42.3 percent from the field and an amazing 93.3 percent from the free throw line while ESU shot only 73.3 percent from the charity stripe.
The first half was mainly all about the Warriors as they outplayed Millersville and led by seven points at the end of the first half, 30-23. It was definitely a different story once the second half started as junior forward Eddie Callendar dropped seven points and led the Marauders to a quick 13-1 run to put them up by five, 36-31. ESU was able to come back and tie the game a couple times, but Millersville would never let them gain the lead back and went on to win this game by a final score of 61-58, although it wasn’t easy to keep the Warriors down.
Anthony Moe was without question the leader of the Marauders in this win, as eight of his 18 rebounds were on the offensive end of the court, which aided Millersville in tallying 16 second chance points. Moe’s 18 rebounds were the most by a Marauder since Elijah Obade grabbed 18 as well in Dec. 2012.
Obviously, it wasn’t just a one man show. Every player on the floor for the Marauders contributed significantly. Eddie Callendar notched a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds while adding on four steals in the contest and junior guard Shawn Williams added 14 points on 6-9 shooting with three rebounds.
The win moved Millersville to 11-11 on the season with a 7-9 record in the PSAC while ESU is now 14-6 with a 12-4 PSAC record.
