Dan- So this has been a really bad week for me in terms of MLB because Buctober has officially come and gone. My Pirates, who had the second best record in the MLB, still had to participate in the wildcard “win-and-in” game against the Chicago Cubs this post season. Now, I may be saying this just because I’m still salty about the loss, but the MLB postseason has the dumbest bracket set up possible. Why would the second best team in the country have to play in a wildcard game? I think that the MLB needs to change its postseason structure.
Sam- The shortest month of the year has been Buctober. They seem to just get unlucky in the wildcard. It is not like they snuck into the playoffs. They took care of business in the regular season, but again came out unlucky since the Cardinals had the best record in baseball and happen to be in the same division. Also, that they had to see the best pitcher right now in that one game playoff in Jake Arrieta. I do agree that the MLB needs to change the format. Granted I love the one game playoffs, but a three game series would be farther and probably bring in more revenue for MLB. They should look into a 3-5-7-7 format in the playoffs or adopt what the NBA is going to this year.
Dan- I definitely agree that at the very least they should adopt a 3-5-7-7 format. I think it would be the easiest change to make to the playoff system from where it stands now. I understand the big draw of a one game decider but it does leave teams, like the Pirates, feeling unlucky. The dominant performance by the Pirates during the regular season was almost all because of the strong overall pitching rotation. If there was a three game series instead the Pirates could have shown the strength of Cole, Liriano, and Burnett matched up against Arrieta, Lester, and Hammel and overall I feel like we would’ve come out on top.
Sam- That would have been a very intriguing series. The MLB could have done a 1-2 format where the team with the best record hosts game two and three. The Pirates have just been so unlucky in recent years. They finally got a playoff birth in 2013 when the got to Johnny Cueto. They ultimately ended up losing to the Cardinals there division is there worst nightmare. It is only going to get worse.
Dan- The central is too stacked, and the Pirates are getting shafted because of it. The Pirates do have hope though. The Pirates have an amazing farm system and great players coming up through the divisions. Polonco had a great year and he’s finally becoming Andrew McCutchen version 2.0. We have a solid set of bats on our starting nine and things are looking good as long as we don’t mess it up ourselves.
Sam- I agree that the central is the best division in baseball currently. It will more than likely stay that way too since the Cardinals always seem to field a great team, the Cubs prospects are coming of age, and the Pirates should only improve. The outfield of Marte, Cutch and Polonco are arguably the best in all of baseball. I believe the World Series window is wide open for the Pirates for the next couple years, but their biggest competition is their very own division.
