Oct. 18, 2021 is the deadline for voter registration in Pennsylvania.
Amidst mounting political tensions, heated debates and an ongoing global pandemic, the 2020 presidential election became an all consuming headline in America’s civil discourse. After chaotic debates that resemble more of a sporting match, it may come as no surprise that voter turnout broke records in 2020.
A study published by Pew Research Center stated that nearly two-thirds of eligible voters cast a ballot in the 2020 election. According to a study published by the United States Census Bureau, 17 million more people voted during the 2020 presidential election than in 2016. This proved to be the largest increase in voter data the United States Census Bureau had ever recorded. Who is to blame for the increase in voter turnout? People between the ages of 18-34 helped bolster the dramatic increase in voter turnout.
While presidential elections draw a crowd, local elections have the potential to cause direct influence on the voter’s community. The upcoming election on Nov. 2 may not produce meme-worthy debate content or fiery talking points for national news media, however the opportunity to participate in the democratic process remains the same.
